The process is simple, but it does require a variety of tools and materials, such as pencils, marker pens, carbon paper, tracing paper, lino, carving and sharpening tools, ink, an inking slab, a roller or brayer, a printing press or baren, and printmaking paper.

To begin, you will need to draw the design onto the lino block using a slightly soft pencil. Permanent marker pens like Sharpies or waterproof pigment pens can be used to make the lines clearer while carving. You can then transfer the design from a drawing or photo onto the lino using carbon paper and tracing paper. Once the design has been transferred, you can begin carving the lino. Grey lino, softcut, speedy carve, and Japanese vinyl are commonly used lino types.
